Pokemon have always come in all shapes and sizes, from the small and vicious to the large and gentle. There are plenty of these creatures who are adored by people and trainers alike for how pretty or adorable they look. However, despite how they may appear, even the cutest Pokemon can wield tremendous power.
Updated January 27, 2024 by William Quick: With Pokemon Scarlet and Violet still holding up the mainline Pokemon series and Palworld coming in and showing what can be done with Pokemon-like elements, we're looking back at all the little creatures we've come to know. There are so many to keep track of, but there are those that stick out in our minds more than others, especially the cute ones. Even though they make us smile, they can also have Hidden Power (so to speak) to unleash in battle. Here are some of those Pokemon cuties that know how to throw down.
If you're like me, then when you first saw Rotom, you didn't think it was a Pokemon. Like, it was not one that you could have on your team, it was just a companion Pokemon. However, I was excited to learn that not only can you have this ethereal spark of energy in your team, but it will be worth your while to get one.
Rotom has the interesting dual-typing of Electric/Ghost, which reduces its counter-types significantly with its ability Levitate taking Ground out of the mix as well. It's a strong Special attacker with good defense and a mix of powerful moves like Discharge and Trick. And yet, its true power comes from the fact that it can change its whole form and type by possessing different appliances to suit your needs.
When you decide to walk through the swamps and see a little blob of goo, maybe you catch it, maybe you don't. You likely didn't expect this icky-looking creature to grow into a large and adorable creature known as Goodra that was born for sticky hugs. Just remember, it's still a dragon.
Even though Goodra only has a pure Dragon-type to rely on, that doesn't slow it down one bit. It has a high base stat count, excelling in several stats that can allow it to hit hard and take hits as well. It has a good variety of abilities designed to boost its stats in certain situations, while its Hidden Ability Gooey will slow opponents that touch it. It can also trip people up with a varied move set of Water, Grass, and Normal-type moves to learn.
Slowpoke is oblivious to many things and there's almost something envious about that. It was one of the first Pokemon to have an interesting dual-typing with Water/Psychic, making us wonder what kind of power it truly wielded. Then it carelessly got bit by a Shellder and, with a goofy smile on its face, became the tougher-than-expected Slowbro.
This is a Pokemon that is both a wizard and a tank, sporting high scores in HP, Defense, and Special Attack, with solid scores in Attack and Special Defense to make it even more threatening. While it doesn't have access to many Water-type moves, it does learn Surf and balances it out with some of the best Psychic attacks a Pokemon can learn. To help it stay in control, Slowbro has the Abilities of Oblivious or Own Tempo to protect its sharper-than-implied mind from things like Intimidate.
Audino is a Pokemon that you don't know what it's supposed to be at first glance. Is it a rabbit? Some kind of bear? An irregular doll based on some animated character you've never heard of? Well, whatever it is, it's sweet, cute, and looks like it wants to be friends. When trained right, it can do a lot to protect its friends.
It may only be a Normal-type, but Audino has good scores spread across its stats with HP being its highest, so it can take more than just one for the team. It fits the support role well with Abilities like Healer and Regenerator to heal its teammates or itself respectively. Even so, the amount of attacking moves it learns is quite ridiculous coming from something so sweet. It can learn Take Down, Double-Edge, and Last Resort, which is a testament to its destructive power.
Quite possibly the most memorable of all the Pikachu clones that are in every generation is Mimikyu. It disguises itself in a Pikachu-like costume, so that people love it, and hides because its true form will scare those who see it. This is aninteresting twist on the cute and cuddly trope, as Mimikyu is actually a Ghost/Fairy-type Pokemon with a dark secret.
Mimikyu may look innocent and harmless, but it has a powerful ability called "Disguise" that allows it to take a free hit without taking any damage. This can give it a significant advantage in battle, as it can survive attacks that would otherwise knock it out. It also has a move called "Play Rough," which is a Fairy-type move that deals damage and has a chance to lower the opponent's Attack stat. This move, combined with its ability to take hits, makes Mimikyu a formidable opponent on the battlefield.
Another adorable Pokemon with hidden power is Eevee. Eevee is known for its ability to evolve into several different forms, each with its own unique type and abilities. From the playful Electric-type Jolteon to the graceful Water-type Vaporeon, Eevee's evolutions are not only cute but also powerful.
In particular, Espeon and Umbreon, the Psychic and Dark-type evolutions of Eevee, respectively, are worth noting. Espeon has high Special Attack and Speed stats, making it a fast and hard-hitting special attacker. Its ability, "Magic Bounce," reflects any non-damaging moves back to the opponent, providing a defensive advantage. Umbreon, on the other hand, has excellent defensive stats and can take hits like a champ. Its ability, "Synchronize," can pass on status conditions to the opponent, making it a useful support Pokemon.
Lastly, we can't forget about the iconic Pikachu. Pikachu has captured the hearts of many Pokemon fans with its cute and lovable appearance. In battle, Pikachu may seem outclassed by its evolved form, Raichu, but don't underestimate its power.
Pikachu has access to the ability "Lightning Rod," which redirects Electric-type moves aimed at its team members to itself, making it an effective counter against Electric-type attackers. It can also learn moves like "Volt Tackle" and "Electro Ball," which are powerful Electric-type moves that can deal significant damage.
These are just a few examples of the many cute Pokemon that possess hidden power. It's important to remember that appearances can be deceiving, and even the most adorable creatures can pack a punch in battle. So, the next time you encounter a cute Pokemon, don't underestimate its strength.
