The Medic's Prescription: Healing and Havoc in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord

In the vast and unforgiving world of Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord, a game brimming with battles and bloodshed, the medicine skill may initially appear lackluster to newcomers. Yet, this seemingly humble skill holds the power to prevent your units from meeting their untimely demise on the battlefield, transforming lethal blows into treatable injuries that can gradually heal over time. As the game progresses, a high medicine skill becomes a saving grace, sparing you precious time, hard-earned denars, and the arduous task of replenishing your war-weary troops after each grueling encounter.

Through strategic allocation of attribute and focus points, you can passively level up your medicine skill while engaging in glorious combat against bandits and rival armies. Wise choice of perks can amplify and materialize the benefits of this skill, even from the early stages of the game.

While medicine holds immense value as a skill to assign to one of your companions, designating them as the esteemed surgeon of your party, certain perks within this skill tree prove equally effective for your character. Take, for instance, the remarkable Preventive Medicine. With just one focus point invested, you can swiftly reach level 25, unlocking this perk. Not only does it grant a slight increase in hit points, but its most remarkable effect lies in healing 30 percent of your health after each battle. This means that even if you fall in combat, you needn't wait for your wounds to mend before engaging in another bout. You can confidently lead your army into battle without relying on the capricious whims of auto-resolve, even when caught off guard.

The subsequent perk choices within the medicine skill tree depend on your playstyle and the stage of the game. The Triage Tent perk enhances healing rates for your party when encamped at a settlement or stationary on the map. On the other hand, the Walk It Off perk bolsters healing rates while on the move. While the benefits bestowed by the Triage Tent are undeniably potent, for most playthroughs, Walk It Off proves more practical as you spend a considerable amount of time traversing the realm. However, if you adopt a defensive approach or find yourself embroiled in a war with a formidable kingdom, the benefits offered by the Triage Tent might outweigh its mobile counterpart. In such cases, it may even be worth toggling between these two perks based on the prevailing situation.

Enter Doctor's Oath, a perk that stands as one of the most valuable and daring choices in the game. When combined with select roguery and leadership perks that bestow various advantages when taking prisoners, Doctor's Oath imbues your medicine skill with a newfound ability: turning fallen foes into injured captives if you emerge victorious. This proves exceptionally valuable, especially when paired with a high medicine skill. Yet, it's important to note that while this perk opens the gates to unparalleled opportunities, it also renders defeat much more punishing. When you lose a closely contested battle, typically, your adversaries suffer significant losses, rendering them unable to partake in subsequent conflicts and vulnerable to future assaults. However, with Doctor's Oath, your benevolence towards their fallen soldiers allows them to recuperate swiftly, returning to the fray with renewed vigor.

Should you have previously chosen the Triage Tent on your medicinal journey, the Best Lodging perk becomes the perfect complement, maximizing the benefits of convalescence in settlements after arduous battles. This combination proves particularly potent if you've recently established a fledgling kingdom with a single settlement, constantly besieged by more powerful realms. With this perk duo, you can valiantly defend against multiple sieges, enduring minimal losses between each encounter.

For a more general approach, Best Medicine emerges as the more consistent perk. With a modest investment in stewardship and leadership skills, maintaining morale above 70 becomes easily achievable. Both perks, aside from boosting morale, offer similar secondary benefits, providing a charming bonus of cultivating additional relationships while waiting in town.

Siege battles, notorious for their tendency to inflict substantial casualties even before the clash commences, present a unique challenge. Without careful planning, a poorly executed siege could leave you unable to achieve victory. Enter Siege Medic, a remarkable perk that mitigates some of these casualties, rendering protracted bombardments less perilous.

Veterinarian, a perk tailored to specific playstyles, proves indispensable for those who focus primarily on mounted troops, such as Khan's Guards. The cost of maintaining a formidable cavalry force can skyrocket swiftly, but with this perk, you can save a considerable sum, safeguarding your noble steeds over time.

Approaching the final stretch of the medicine skill tree, we encounter a selection of governor perks. Bush Doctor, enhancing hearth growth in bound villages, vies against Pristine Streets, which augments prosperity in towns. As prosperity directly influences a settlement's income, Pristine Streetscan prove more beneficial in the long run, especially if you aim to maximize your kingdom's wealth. However, if you find yourself frequently campaigning in the wilds, far from town, and relying heavily on village recruits, Bush Doctor could give your economy a much-needed boost.

In the realm of Bannerlord, the medicine skill is not merely a tool for healing wounds and tending to injuries. It is a testament to the strategic foresight and resourcefulness of a leader. A high medicine skill can turn the tide of battles, reduce casualties, and ensure your troops remain fit for future conflicts. It offers a level of control over the chaos of war, transforming you into the battlefield's benevolent healer.

As you embark on your journey in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord, don't overlook the potential of the medicine skill. Invest wisely in its perks, tailor them to your playstyle and the challenges you face, and witness the transformative power of a skilled medic on the frontlines of war. With a steady hand and a keen eye for opportunity, you can become the medic that mends both the bodies and spirits of your troops, ensuring victory in the tumultuous world of Bannerlord.
