The Elder Scrolls: A Realm of Infinite Possibilities - Who Should Take the Throne?

The gaming world holds its breath as the highly anticipated release of The Elder Scrolls 6 draws nearer. Ever since Bethesda dropped a tantalizing teaser back in 2018, fans have been clamoring for more information about the game. Yet, despite the passage of years, the studio has remained tight-lipped about its progress. With the last Elder Scrolls installment hitting the shelves over a decade ago, the need for an "in-between" game to tide us over has become more apparent than ever.

Look no further than Bethesda's Fallout series for a prime example of how these intermediary games can thrive on their own while keeping fans engaged. Fallout: New Vegas stands as a testament to the success of outsourcing. As Bethesda shifted its focus to Skyrim and later Fallout 4, Obsidian Entertainment stepped in and crafted a unique experience that filled the void between releases.

Outsourcing sequels isn't a novel concept in the gaming industry. BioWare's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords was developed by Obsidian, the very team behind Fallout: New Vegas. Even the Call of Duty franchise employs a rotating roster of developers for each release. This staggered release schedule ensures a steady flow of games without exhausting the development teams. While we don't need a game every single year, a more frequent cadence would certainly be appreciated.

The "New Vegas" model not only provides a reasonable release schedule but also opens the door for fresh perspectives to shape beloved franchises. Obsidian managed to capture the essence of the original Fallout games while building upon Bethesda's foundation, resulting in a timeless experience. The writing and design elements of New Vegas bore the unmistakable mark of Obsidian's craftsmanship. It would be fascinating to witness another developer tackle The Elder Scrolls in a similar fashion.

With numerous talented studios at our disposal, the possibilities for breathing new life into The Elder Scrolls are boundless. Consider the recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard and ZeniMax Media by Xbox, offering unique opportunities for collaboration among RPG powerhouses. Bethesda and Obsidian now reside under the same roof, so to speak, alongside Blizzard. The prospect of either of these studios taking the reins of The Elder Scrolls is undeniably enticing.

Alternatively, CD Projekt Red, the masterminds behind The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077, could offer an intriguing take on the franchise. Their distinct approach to RPGs has captivated players worldwide, and it's not hard to imagine them leaving their indelible mark on The Elder Scrolls. Larian Studios, known for their work on Baldur's Gate 3, brings yet another distinct flavor to the mix. Their expertise in crafting immersive worlds could make for a compelling Elder Scrolls experience.

While an "in-between" Elder Scrolls game before The Elder Scrolls 6 may be a distant dream, it's worth pondering the possibilities for the future of the series. The realm of The Elder Scrolls is ripe with untapped potential, waiting for the touch of a visionary developer to shape its destiny. As we await the grand return of Tamriel, let's keep our hearts and minds open to the infinite possibilities that lie ahead.
