Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: A Puzzle-Platformer Adventure That's Fun for Everyone

When it comes to classic Nintendo games, Mario Vs. Donkey Kong is a gem that has stood the test of time. Originally released in 2004 on the Game Boy Advance, this delightful puzzle game has now been modernized and brought to the Nintendo Switch with a fresh makeover. With improved graphics and new content, including two never-before-seen worlds, Mario Vs. Donkey Kong offers a puzzle-laden platforming experience that is sure to captivate players of all ages.

While Mario Vs. Donkey Kong leans more towards being a puzzle game than a traditional platformer, it still retains enough elements of the Super Mario franchise to make fans feel right at home. Enemies have been transformed into toys from the Mario Toy Factory, complete with wind-up mechanisms and unique mechanics. The game's focus is on solving puzzles by manipulating the environment, with multiple solutions to discover for each challenge.

The remake of Mario Vs. Donkey Kong keeps the same silly and beloved storyline from the original. In the opening cinematic, we see Donkey Kong watching a TV commercial for Mini Mario toys and immediately developing a strong desire to have one. Unfortunately, the store is sold out, so he decides to take matters into his own hands and breaks into the Mario Toy Factory, stealing all the Mini Mario toys. Naturally, Mario catches wind of this mischief and embarks on a chase to rescue the adorable wind-up friends as chaos ensues throughout interactive environments.

With over 130 levels spread across eight worlds, including the two new additions exclusive to the Nintendo Switch version, Mario Vs. Donkey Kong offers plenty of content to keep players entertained. In the first half of each world, Mario must find a key to unlock doors and progress further. In the second half, he must locate a dropped Mini-Mario toy while solving puzzles that involve button pressing, enemy defeating, and timing falling blocks. The final two levels of each world present unique challenges, with one requiring Mario to guide the rescued Mini-Mario toys to safety and the other being a thrilling boss battle against Donkey Kong himself.

Aside from the visual upgrades and cinematic cutscenes, the Nintendo Switch remake introduces several changes to the game's modes and mechanics. Merry Mini-Land and Slippery Summit are the two new worlds, offering inventive puzzles and obstacles. Players can also unlock Time Attack, Plus Levels, and Expert Levels for an extra challenge. On the flip side, Casual Mode provides a more relaxed experience with added protection for Mario and the removal of the timer.

Mario Vs. Donkey Kong strikes a perfect balance between nostalgia and polish. Even if you've played the game before, the updated version feels fresh and inviting. The early levels may seem a bit too easy, but don't fret— the difficulty ramps up as you progress, providing a satisfying challenge. Whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer to the series, Mario Vs. Donkey Kong is a charming adventure that guarantees hours of fun.

So, get ready to embark on a whimsical journey filled with puzzles, platforming, and the timeless rivalry between Mario and Donkey Kong. Stay tuned for our full review, coming soon!
