Only last week, I released my review of the Lexar NM790 4TB SSD. In the review, I highlighted how this SSD serves as evidence of "how affordable SSDs have become in the last decade" and described it as "truly astonishing." However, that was just last week when the price for this drive was approximately $200. Today, during Amazon's Big Deal Days event, it is available for only $177.
Indeed, it seems like an opportune moment to consider investing in such a significantly large SSD. This is particularly true considering that this year's biggest game releases alone exceed the capacity of a 1TB SSD. And that's without even accounting for upcoming major releases like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which is certain to consume a substantial amount of storage space with its vast requirements.

If you're looking for a concise explanation of why this drive stands out compared to others and would rather not read my complete review of the Lexar NM790, allow me to summarize the reasons why I appreciate this drive:
✔️ It offers impressive speed, matching the performance of the top PCIe 4.0 drives available, with read speeds of 7,400MB/s and write speeds of 6,500MB/s. Remarkably, this is achieved even without the presence of DRAM in the drive.
✔️ The utilization of high-layer NAND, specifically YMTC's 232-layer TLC, allows all four terabytes of storage to be accommodated on a single side of this SSD. This design is advantageous for maintaining lower operating temperatures, especially in cases where motherboards lack an NVMe slot heatsink or only provide contact with the SSD through a thermal pad on one side.
✔️ This drive operates at a cool and efficient temperature. It does not encounter significant heat-related issues, and even during prolonged write tests, it maintains a stable temperature.
✔️ With four terabytes of storage, this SSD boasts a spacious SLC write cache. In fact, the cache is so large that the majority of gamers need not be concerned about exceeding its capacity.
For those who require a more modest amount of storage for their Steam library, there is also a 2TB version available at a fantastic discounted price.
To avoid redundancy, I will conclude with a portion of my review's final thoughts, as it would be unnecessary to reiterate the same points using different wording:
I had initially believed that we had reached the peak potential for PCIe Gen4 drives with the previous wave of SSDs. With the arrival of the first wave of Gen5 drives, it seemed like the most thrilling advancements in controllers and NAND were focused on optimizing the faster interface. However, the Lexar NM790 proves otherwise. This high-capacity SSD performs on par with many of the leading Gen4 NVMe SSDs available today, all while being more affordable.
